The University of Salerno

schola medica salernitana schola medica salernitana Salerno was renowned since ancient times because of its prestigious Scuola Medica (School of Medicine), the most important source of medical knowledge in Europe in the early middle ages. The "Scuola Medica Salernitana" achieved its utmost splendour between the X and the XIII century, especially through the impulse given by Alfano I and Costantino l'Africano, who won for Salerno the title of "Town of Hippocrates" (Hippocratica Civitas).

The University Institute of Magistero "Giovanni Cuomo", founded in 1944, received the distinguished heritage of an ancient tradition. Since 1968, when the University became public, the enrolments have increasingly grown.

Today the two campuses of Fisciano and Baronissi (about 10 km from Salerno and 40 km from Naples International Airport) take in over 40.000 students attending the wide range of subjects offered by the 9 Faculties (Economics, Pharmaceutics, Law, Engineering, Humanities, Foreign Languages, Political Science, Natural Science, Mathematics and Physics and Education Science)
