Xenakis and film: the composer’s hidden side

Sharon Kanach

Drawing from extremely diverse archival sources, a treasure trove of unsuspected and rich materials where Iannis Xenakis deliberately uses film as a chosen medium both for his personal creative expression and as a vehicle to deliberately portray his own persona to an unidentified audience is being discovered. To date, 140 documents have been found (not counting the plethora of individual performances posted by others on YouTube or Vimeo). It becomes clear that, from the start, for Xenakis, film is a medium to be reckoned with and is an integral component of his famous “artist-conceptor” model. Our demonstration sets out to open up a potentially potent new branch of xenakian research by sharing some poignant examples/excerpts.
