The first edition of the conference, SMC '04, took place at IRCAM in Paris in october 2004. It replaced the 11th edition of JIM (Journées d'Informatique Musicale), organized every year by AFIM, since 1994.

SMC '05 took place at the University of Salerno, replacing the 15th edition of CIM (Colloquio di Informatica Musicale), organized every other year by AIMI, since 1983 (with some small irregularities in the periodicity). The main topics of this second edition were organized around different concepts of representation of sound, from the very symbolic attempts to establish an efficient notation of electro-acoustic musics, to the mathematics of time-frequency, and their manifold relations with various categories of synthesis, and classifications in terms of sounding objects. One of the main ambitions of the conference was to encourage confrontation and exchange of ideas between different research communities. The role of space was emphasized, intended either as the physical space, in which sound unfolds, or as a humanly-built environment, trough which the sonic information is organized and understood.

The third SMC edition was organized by GMEM - Centre National de Création Musicale in Marseille. The Conference took place at the "Agora des Sciences" in Marseille during "Les Musiques 2006" Festival organized by the GMEM. This international festival included, during 10 days in various cultural and patrimonial places in the city, a multitude of musical and artistical forms and languages: Intrumental, Vocal, Mixt Music pieces, Multimedia productions, Dance and Music Performances, Installations, Discussions... SMC06 was supported by the DMDTS (Direction de la Musique, de la Danse, du Théatre et des Spectacles).

The 4th SMC Conference (SMC'07) was organised by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Laboratory of Music Technology & Acoustics, Department of Music Studies and Signal Processing Laboratory, Department of Informatics and Telecommunications), in collaboration with the Ionian University. The conference took place at the island of Lefkada under the auspices of the Cultural Center of Lefkada, the Lefkada Prefecture and Municipality and the Greek Ministry of Education. The main topic of the SMC'07 conference was reflected symbolically in the archetypes of the three primordial Muses according to Pausanias (Pau.9.29.2.): Melete (practice, occasion, research), Mneme (memory), Aoidos (song, voice), corresponding to three fundamental areas in computer music disciplines: research and practice, archival and storage, and performance and music making. The Muses' archetypes of research/practice, archiving/storage, and song/voice stood as virtual partners in a dialogue on the orientation and new research areas of computer music and music informatics, within the continuously and rapidly developing field of digital media.
