4th Sound and Music Computing Conference

The Sound and Music Computing Conference aims at promoting European and international exchanges around topics related to sound and music computing. SMC is jointly supervised by:

  • AFIM (Association Française d'Informatique Musicale)
  • AIMI (Associazione Italiana di Informatica Musicale)
  • DEGEM (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Elektroakustische Musik)
  • HACI (Hellenic Association of Music Informatics)

The 4th SMC Conference (SMC'07) is organised by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Laboratory of Music Technology & Acoustics, Department of Music Studies and Signal Processing Laboratory, Department of Informatics and Telecommunications), in collaboration with the Ionian University. The conference will take place at the fascinating island of Lefkada [ http://www.lefkada.gr ], under the auspices of the Cultural Center of Lefkada , the Lefkada Prefecture and Municipality and the Greek Ministry of Education.

MELETE, MNEME, AOIDOS:
MUSIC / SOUND AND COMPUTERS

"[The Muses] are all of one mind, their hearts are set upon song and their spirit is free from care. He is happy whom the Muses love. For though a man has sorrow and grief in his soul, yet when the servant of the Muses sings, at once he forgets his dark thoughts and remembers not his troubles. Such is the holy gift of the Muses to men" ~ H e s i o d ~.

The main topic of the SMC'07 conference is reflected symbolically in the archetypes of the three primordial Muses according to Pausanias (Pau.9.29.2.): Melete (practice, occasion, research), Mneme (memory), Aoidos (song, voice) , corresponding to three fundamental areas in computer music disciplines: research and practice; archival and storage; and performance and music making. The Muses' archetypes of research/practice, archiving/storage, and song/voice will stand as virtual partners in a dialogue on the orientation and new research areas of computer music and music informatics, within the continuously and rapidly developing field of digital media.

The concerts that will frame SMC'07 will have a special theme on Ancient Greek mythology and cultural heritage, which can be re-interpreted in the electronic medium.

Above all, SMC'07 aims at bringing researchers of computing, informatics and engineering in contact with composers and musicologists in order to discuss novel tools of sound and music computing and their current and future uses.
